overall, this is a much welcome reflection on forgiveness that is all too rare in today’s Hollywood. it’s radically simple, which advances the message. However, it’s not without its fair share of enormous problems. namely, the humor is jarring, which left me feeling that this movie was afraid to take itself seriously. what’s more, the dialogue is clunky and the performances could only do so much to save it. the cinematography is rather boring, and the editing doesn’t match the tone of the film. i would have preferred certain shots to ruminate a little bit, but the film cuts quickly between the characters and rushes through establishing shots. i don’t normally nitpick this sort of thing but i think it’s particularly disappointing given how much the editing *could* have reinforced the themes. performances from our leading characters are near perfect, but ultimately limited by the lines they had to deliver. i desperately want to rate this movie higher because i like the message it puts forward, but i cannot ignore how much better it could have been if it was more totally consistent.
