A Summer's Tale
"Je suis bien meilleure que tous les jeunes qui font du cinéma autour de moi. Pourquoi est-ce que je ferais ce qu'ils veulent? Pourquoi veulent-ils m'imposer leur volonté...je ne veux rien donner à personne, pas même la plus petite part de ma liberté, ou alors seulement à l'homme que j'aime "
I see everyone in the reviews talking about Gaspard as a player or a manipulator, but I don't think he was. the movie itself didn't punish him for it, it was somehow more about his emptiness. for me he was kind of avoidant and weak when it comes to relationships...i think he just wanted to be loved but needed someone else to choose for him.. does that make him a coward as Margot said? yes and she was the only one who could see through him and still care.
This might sound random but he reminded me of Jo March from little women. in a way that they both want deep genuine connection, yet they share the same contradiction: circling around intimacy but feeling disconnected from thier own desires while still chasing the feeling of being wanted. this explains why i couldn't see him as selfish, i think he was frightened by the idea of vulnerability that comes with loving someone first. for him... being loved feels like a safer option than risking humiliation or rejection by loving first.
The entire movie i wanted to stop him and ask: "what do you actually want when nobody is choosing you "
