This might be one of the strangest experiments I’ve seen a multinational corporation like Apple undertake! Like this shit is truly fascinating, a borderline insane project that you simply do not get very often and I’ve had some time to think cause I’m extremely mixed on this show, I just don’t know wether I like this or I’m getting all wrapped up in the profound look of it all, the performances and maybe the story too or it’s ultimately a bit of a miss from Apple and I think it might be the latter in this case!
First thing is cuarón and co are having a field day with this one, he’s spewing cinema everywhere in this, one of the great things I love about this is the way it looks, I cannot express how amazing the cinematography is, the natural lighting and the shaky cam corder, pan in and pan out moments, all of it is just top level kinda stuff BUT it is very heavy for something that is at its best a wrote melodrama and that’s something that became more clear to me as I continued watching, it’s not that much of an issue but when it’s shot like a film (I even think cuarón would want you to refer to this a film too) and has top talent in too, it almost doesn’t feel right, I think a lot of it is not fully realised either, another episode or two might’ve been beneficial to build up to the climax that it did go into, which I do think is underdeveloped, all too sudden and just ultimately I do not know what this show was trying to go into? I get the cancel culture, misogyny and misinformation themes but I don’t think any of that is executed as well as it could be considering the filmmaker and I don’t think the show is as engaging or smart as it thinks it is unfortunately!
Now I’m not against letting filmmakers have freedom with what they want to do, im glad this Isant made by 20 people BUT in another sense I can just tell this was given no notes, that is fundamentally clear and I just don’t know if your doing a great artist like cuarón a service by letting him do this, I think that there is a reason why great filmmakers who write their own stuff and direct things, work best within a time frame, 2 to 3 hrs max and this feels appropriate to me where’s this amount of space apple having willing given him for “disclaimer” feels wrong in some ways!
It just feels like a different era for tv in general this show, it doesn’t look like any other tv show and I do associate Apple with prestige telly but with this there’s this lavishness and richnesses to it like the house blanchett & Sasha baron live in is just real estate porn and emmanuel lubezki casually just shooting handheld footage in Venice in a way that’s meant to be period but it’s just so luxurious that it’s kinda intoxicating, the show just feels overly laboured and indulgent at times that it fails the tv test in my opinion!
cate blanchett Is wonderful and looks incredible for 55!
Bravo
