Malena
Any form of media that has to do with Europe is something I find a lot of interest in— be it music or movies. What stands out to me the most is the way they portrayed the Sicilian seaside, the crashing waves, the local shops, the buildings, the overall aesthetic of the film would make me want to rewatch but coming to the plot itself, makes me question my decision rewatching. If I were to say in one word whether I like this film or not— I can’t say honestly. I find it overly sexual and find the description of the movie misleading, as Renato hasn’t done anything to “protect” Malena; jerking off to, stalking and peeping through a crack in her window isn’t a form of admiration or love or “protection”. That’s just plain creepy and weird. However, Monica Bellucci herself has talked about how if one needs to understand the film they need to understand the Sicilian mentality at the time and that women existed through men and Malena was almost aggregating the local women because as a widow she still made a place for herself in public. I think overall I get what the movie was trying to be but I think they could’ve done a much better way of portraying female resilience in a less weird way. However im still obsessed with Monica belluci and would do anything to look like her. Ending with not a quote from the movie but a quote I found on the internet
“Her beauty was a blessing and a curse”
