WandaVision
I’m a sucker for superhero content, and I thoroughly enjoyed WandaVision. Like a lot of people, I also left the finale feeling underwhelmed. But after sitting with the episode for a while, I’m going to defend it. I still don’t think it was particularly good, but I don’t think there was a better or really even good way to end the show. This was still a solid episode of television, that’s just been obscured by the amazing episodes that preceded it. Yes the boner joke was stupid and a letdown, but also, there’s not really a good way to incorporate the old X-Men into the existing Marvel universe (and with how downhill that franchise went at the end, I’m not sure you’d even want to), so a little bit of fan service is alright. Yes I wish that Inspector Hayward got merced by White Vision or someone, but that also doesn’t fit that well with any character’s arc (maybe Wanda but that’s not clear cut). Yes the big fight between Agnes and Wanda was boring, but it had it’s moments and Wanda needed a big reveal of how powerful she is when concentrated to complete her “you’re the Scarlet Witch” arc, and I’m glad they finally gave some more clarity to her ill-defined and insanely OP magic from previous Marvel movies. Vision’s showdown with White Vision was a great subversion of my expectations with a metaphysical discussion (they had one typical sky-beam type Marvel fight, at least they didn’t have two). And maybe it wasn’t this way for everyone, but the tug at the heartstrings end as the Hex approaches Wanda’s house really hit home for me. Wanda has to put her kids to bed so they can go peacefully, knowing it’s the last time she’ll see them. Wanda watching the end of her relationship with Vision come yet another time, and her finally coming to terms with such unimaginable grief. This episode was not up to the immensely high quality set by the preceding episodes in the season, but WandaVision was so good because of the psychological and emotional elements, and Wanda’s grief won’t last forever. There was never going to be a way to make an end that tied up all the loose ends without some disappointing moments. But what is disappointment at a finale, if not a testament to the quality of the show.

There is one thing that I cannot and will not defend, and it’s the need to keep shoehorning in the Skrulls bullshit.
