Avengers: Infinity War
“We’re in the endgame now.”
Ten years worth of buildup, of characters, location, world building and story. It all built up to this and it all paid off shockingly well. I’ll always remember watching this in cinema in 2018 and feeling utter devastation at that ending. It was all anyone would talk about for months and upon rewatch it still hits me all the same.
It really feels like every movie in the Infinity Saga weaved together to make this film, everything feels important no matter how small. Despite having so much to balance (pun partially intended) this movie still manages to hit such emotional highs by paying off on character dynamics we’ve grown to love, such as Wanda and Vision and Tony and Peter’s relationships, and building upon other ones such as the relationship between Thanos and Gamora, which leads to one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the entire MCU for me.
Speaking of Thanos he is the perfect villain and protagonist. He makes his absolutely insane plan sound feasible, although he’s a ruthless genocidal maniac he believes himself to be merciful and the way Josh Brolin portrays the character like this adds so many layers to such an intriguing villain. Making Thanos and his journey to collect the stones the focus of the movie is such a genius idea.
Having the Avengers properly lose in the end hits extremely hard. Watching the Avengers get utterly defeated no matter how hard they tried and how much they sacrificed is a cinema experience I will never forget, the silence throughout the room when the credits rolled will always stick with me.
As a fan of this franchise since Iron Man first released, this film will always be near and dear to my heart and if the MCU can recreate even a bit of this film’s greatness in ‘Doomsday’ I’ll be satisfied.
