The Creature Commandos
I’m just going to use this to review the new DCU’s Creature Commandos since it’s not on here.
Despite its flaws I think Creature Commandos was a very solid start to the new DCU, even if it is one of James Gunn’s weaker projects.
It is probably my least favourite version of Gunn’s ‘ragtag group of misfits forced to work together to save the world’ trope, since we’ve seen it done better in both Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad.
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work here though as the show’s biggest strength is in the characters of the commandos and its best segments are when it dives into their backstories, Weasel and Nina’s stories were stand outs for me in particular.
Where the show falls short in my opinion is the main plot and antagonists. Plot wise it’s not very engaging outside of the character dynamics between the commandos, especially when the team is so overpowered they easily beat armies in their way.
Pretty much all the antagonists are dull as well, Circe could have been replaced with anyone and the story wouldn’t really change, and for someone who can match Wonder Woman in a battle she is taken out far too easily and far too soon. As for the princess we learn literally nothing about her character or her reasonings for what she does and she’s just kind of boring as a villain.
Again, despite some gripes I have I still really enjoyed this show and the more character centric stories it told and I can’t wait to see what else the new DCU has to offer.
