Werckmeister Harmonies
watching this film was a vulnerable and visceral experience that left me in awe, as if i were experiencing the world for the first time. not in the way a child sees something new, but in the way something newly born blinks against the cold air and doesn’t understand separation, coveting a sense of comfort that is stripped away. it exposes the nakedness of humanity, the fragility of chaos and conformity that violently swirls into collapse
i covet a womb that gives me warmth, and this film denies and recreates it. it’s long takes cradle you but do not protect you. it stretches time until you are forced to sit inside it, without insulation. the darkness almost feels amniotic, hypnotic and surrounding, carrying no promise of safety. you are held within it the way a body is held within the world
the dark atmospheric sublime leaves a whale to rest within it, unable to respond to the world’s demands. while the townspeople move around with reverence and unrest, as if it’s a sacred and incomprehensible experience all at once. the whale is the interior of the world made visible, the depths one could enter and never fully trace, a vastness that holds more than it reveals
