Shrek 2
This is another masterpiece. Everything about it is perfect. The pacing, the jokes, the voice acting, the absolute cultural reset of Fairy Godmother’s "Holding Out For a Hero." It is, unironically, the greatest sequel ever made.
And I hate it.
I hate it because I know I’ll never see another movie like this again. We have reached the peak. We are just living in the swampy aftermath. The dinner scene is unironically better-blocked and more tense than most prestige dramas. The soundtrack isn’t just a collection of songs. It’s a spiritual experience. I have to live the rest of my life knowing that Jennifer Saunders gave the greatest vocal performance in history for a movie about an ogre in a mid-life crisis. How am I supposed to move on from that?
It’s actually a devastatingly good story about the insecurity of being loved for who you really are. It forces Shrek to confront the idea that 'happily ever after' isn't a destination. It’s an active choice to be enough for someone. Watching Shrek literally try to change his DNA because he thinks Fiona deserves a prince, only for the movie to prove that the 'monster' was the hero all along. It’s a story about radical self-acceptance wrapped in a fart joke, and I’ll never forgive DreamWorks for peaking this hard.
