i understand bruce's need to fight crime in a way that doesn't kill people, even if they'd deserve it by some people's standards. i understand his whole story is about grief; about losing his parents and with them his sense of security, stability and comfort. losing them shaped bruce in *such* a way that it's hard to overcome, doesn't matter how much time passes. his need to keep everyone alive ties directly with this trauma. that said, it's *so* hard for me to side with him when it comes to jason. all of bruce's problems with jason, his inability to understand the way he thinks, the way he does things (sometimes maybe too aggressively or recklessly) are tied directly with the type of environment both of them – bruce and jason – were raised, and it doesn't matter how much trauma they might share in common, they're never gonna understand each other. jason as robin, as a *kid*, was never aggressive or violent. he was just a child that saw the system fail him too many times, fail the people it was supposed to protect. when you give a kid that has lived all of his life in poverty the tools to change things for good, you can't expect him to tackle things in a 'smart' and 'sensible' way. jason knew nobody was gonna help the weak and the vulnerable, *he* was the weak and the vulnerable for so many years and look how it ended up for him; his mom dead and dad in prison. people in crime alley didn't have the same opportunities as other people *at all *and jason knew all about it. he knew about desperation and how the people with more power and money abused those who didn't have a thing. how would one expect a kid to react to having nothing one day to suddenly have it all, mixed with the *tools *and the *power *to make a difference? to help his people? bruce was never gonna understand jason's point of view in the way he fought crime because, even though bruce loves his city and breathes for it, he was never *in *the city's crime, he was never *part *of the weak and defenseless, not really. even though he lost his parents, he still grew up in a safe home instead of out in the streets. jason knew the system, bruce knew *of *it. people can say all they want about jason's methods as red hood but he, fundamentally, knew what he was talking about. some villains exist solely *because of* batman, to fight him and terrorize him. what happens when fear stops working and the system doesn't support you? jason believes he can fill up the gaps batman leaves. maybe he can, maybe he can't. gotham city is big enough for both of them anyways.
