Plainclothes
i am awe-striken by the cinematography and camera work in this movie, it really encapsulates the almost horror esc feeling of being watched and on eggshells all the time that came along with being gay/into the same sex in the 90’s (at least it did for a lot of people).
surveillance is really a theme throughout this, be it the police force, the family dynamic or the worry about nosey neighbours (made as a fleeting comment by Blyth), everything feels like it must be done in the shadows. the only respite from this comes in the form of Forsyth‘s character (also excellently played), who always make us and Blyth feel like we can breathe and not have to hide
Blyth and Tovey really commit to the roles they’re playing, you can feel the restlessness, attraction and fear in them both. the panic attacks are palpable through the screen, and the absolute fear of Tovey’s character in the church is too.
the final moments of this movie is where Blyth really shines, you can see he is truly giving his all in that moment. Its powerful.
a great artsy romance, with definite thriller inspirations interwoven too. i highly recommend!
now im off to blow my nose and wipe my tears again.
