The Lighthouse
I don't know how to put the effects this movie had on me into words. If not the greatest, but one of the greatest psychological-drama-horrors to ever be created will be kept with me till the day I die.
I'd like to start with the acting. William Dafoe is such a fantastic actor, and possibly my favorite, but his performance in The Lighthouse is unlike any acting performance I've ever seen. He left us to piece together the mystery of this movie, which is what makes it so great: we don't know what has happened and have to put it together through the movie's progression. Robert Pattinson did not just prove himself to be up with the greats here in this movie, but he proved himself to produce a generational performance through acting, especially on this level of depth, that we've never seen on a modern scale. Sure, Midsommar, Hereditary, Sinners, the list goes on, but acting within the last sentence hasn't been this horrific yet beautiful a portrayal of just a plain and simple man.
The directing: Eggers not only keeps us in the full experience, but he also goes to great lengths to make sure that we feel the experience. Whether it be the style of film, the size of the shot, or the camera positioning, he did not miss a single beat when it came to these shots. Always leave it to A24 to give us the best actor-director combo we've ever seen. I guess I'll leave it there, but final remarks, in an inappropriate fashion: holy f*ck
