Arrival
wow. what a ride. i’m picky when it comes to science fiction because it’s hard to maintain your focus and interest when the story reveals something too early or drags something so irrelevant for far too long. but when it comes to this movie i was truly speechless. every easter egg/plot twist landed perfectly.. i loved the fact that they never blatantly revealed why ian left. we didn’t need to “know” that. we felt why. in fact i don’t even remember when they exactly revealed the daughter’s death. that’s good suspenseful writing.
"Language is the foundation of civilization. It is the glue that holds people together. It is the first weapon drawn in a conflict."
i love the fact that the film focuses on language rather than math and physics. as a huge fan of etymology linguistics and communication i felt super invested in what’s gonna happen next. i was sold the second i’ve realized that this movie was going to do what our big man nolan can’t do (actually introducing the plot properly to its audience and not leaving the job to video essays on youtube)
alien design was genius. it resembles two hands. two hands on earth? ready to shake hands?punch ?give something? who knows…the design itself raises the questions. genius.
on a final note, i think it’s hilarious how american science fictions leads to american(good guys) ending up going against china/russia (aggressive big guys) and convince them to join the good side . so obvious come onnnn. there are 160 more countries out there. get a little creative with it. anyway. 5 stars with a smiley face.
