Downfall
Realistic.
Far too many war films serve as fantastical mystification of war as if to trick younger people into the mindset soldiers had ahead of WWI where everything is going to be over quickly and will be a fun excursion.
There’s no American whitewashing or claiming glory for acts they didn’t play a part in.
The people here are so well humanised for a second you find yourself rooting for them such as Fegelein though only for a split second until you realise he’s still a Nazi officer, fuck ‘em.
This also serves to remove the mystique and power away from the idea of Hitler as a super villain. Shown as a weak old man unable to accept the reality of his situation or the world closing in around him (literally via the grace of the Red Army) the portrayal here is one of the best in an war film ever.
