Obsession
I have a near dangerous amount of things to say about this movie, because holy fuck. Massive spoiler warnings ahead, and an essay incoming.
To start off, through the opening scenes all i could think was, “im going to hate this”. In the start there were countless cliches, like an indescribable amount. I though the wish thing was dumb, i though the romance was dumb. Oh what a fool i was…
After a while i began to enjoy the lighting, the framing and oh the wonderful horror scenes. The way the movie is cut and the music calls back to classics like Twin Peaks, the shadows to The Exorcist and so many more in there. Speaking of the lighting around this time we see the first real horror aspect come in the play, the scene where she watches Bear sleep. I found it lousy if im going to be honest. It didnt seem like it fit in with the semi-cgi face that she had. On the other hand, it was terrifying. I understand with the tiney budget they had, i might have been the best that they could do. The cat sandwich could be a call back to one of the most iconic short films of our time, the one where the wife feeds her abuse husband sandwiches with glass and poop etc. Its also around here we see her mind collapse apon its self. Its the first time she askes for death, and the first time she attempts suicide. On top of that they begin developing Ian and others alot more. Finnaly we get to the party scene, what i would call the end to that part.
So far we have maybe 3 call backs to other thriller and horror classics.
I would kick off the next segment ealier, but most of it feels like filler, so ill start when Bear meets that other girl (i forgot her name) in the car. We are finally seing true horror now as she askes more and more for death, and Bear gets more and more scared. We then see the car, oh the glorious car scene. Possible call backs to recent horror was mixed in there, but all you could think was “shes coming” and oh lawd she was coming. The scene plays out like you would want Weaponses car scene to play out. The gore and practical effects are MENTAL. I wouldnt be shocked if that scene alone cost upwards of 500,000 dollars for any major studio. But im going to skip the rest of that, to go to the final few scenes.
The final 2 as im going to say here (leading up to Ian being shot and after.) There are so many referances. From other horrors like Weapons again and possibly more, this scene feels so fucking real. From the insecurity of suicide to the very end clearly showing referances to a modern Romeo And Juliet, it digs so insanely deep in inconceivable ways. I heard mulitple people in the theatre gasp, and even one person i think cried. It felt so real. I feel like at this point im waffling about the actual plot leading up to my opinion so here it is.
On a budget of what, 700,000 dollars? This movie feels like Scary Movie with all its mixed and matched arcs IF it was ment to be a serious horror. I can name over 15 movies they probably referenced and fuck me the acting was stunning. The moments of clarity are some of the most terrifying scenes laid to screen, and im still thinking about it hoursr later. I was shocked when i found out who directed this as i think of him as that one funny tiktoker. He did insane on this and i could see him being massive in the feature. Concidering this has no hype in Denmark it was crazy to see so many hype horror fans come see this. It was like an event.
I mean what they have done with such a small team, and i mean like 20 seconds of end credits, is borderline record breaking. It shows how cinema is not only still producing good original unique ideas and movies, but people WILL see it and people DO like it. I dont get why we dont see more of this. The only original movies are horrors, maybe thats the problem. Please go out there, watch the new movie, see the new short films, support art!
