Hereditary
All in all, the last 20 or 30 minutes were scary to me, because that's when it got into the violent stuff; the rest wasn't scary. I predicted 80% of the main events that harmed the characters too, which is not a good thing, such as the deaths, and Joan being involved via the mat and the cult being at the funeral and the fact the granny tried to possess her son and did the same to charlie hence the similar name BLAH BLAH BLAH, I clocked this stuff straight away. This is, overall, a boring film for the most part; it being 2 hours is not necessary. It teased us for so long with nonsensical stuff we have to research for 10 hours to understand, only for them to drop a deliberately confusing ending like that, and really, "we reject the trinity"? reaaaaaaaaallly???? this is the LITERALLY the equivalent of throwing a clove of garlic at a vampire. (unless they mean the trinity of the females in the family which would make no sense).
The mother's acting was jarring at times, and more than enough, most notably during the scene in which she begs her husband to burn the book near the film's ending; here, the performance tips into genuine irritation. Hysteria is, of course warranted here within the narrative, but the performance just makes me feel like the husband who wants to shoot her deep down because she is just annoying. I thought to myself " you're not as good an actor as you think you are, so lay off the meth sis ahahaaaaa". The father was absent the whole film; he's just another piece of furniture that gets grilled like a kebab, and now I'm going to have to read a newspaper just to understand why that happened.
I noticed a weird dubbing issue at around 1 hour and 17 minutes in, which distracted me, to be honest. Also, the scene where she pulls up some books, it's in some sort of ancient Sanskrit mumbo jumbo, even though this devil bullshit is supposed to be European or Arab-related. That was a little odd thing I noticed. I do hate films that force you to fully understand them only by reading a whole separate series of articles, and it's not like you can even guess it unless you already know some super hyper-specific information. The thing is, this information is more than just interpretation, because nothing has been explained at all, not that it has to be, but at least help the viewer out a little.
I'd say this is a maximum of about 2.8 stars, or 3.2 at most, because despite having some nice camera tricks, there are a ton of things you can point out and question, like why hasn't character X done X to prevent or learn about X. I see this had a hefty ish budget but it wasn't as bad as Bird Box, for example. Horrors find it near impossible to put together a half-decent story; they can do great with making it look nice and feel scary as hell, but the story is always braindead / filled with holes. I wanna say more but ive seen this twice and it never left an impact on me at all, there is a reason i did not remember the story except from the part where he smacks his head on a table cos ive seen shitty clips of it.
i liked the film overall thats what matter there are many things to improve it but its one of the few horrors i do not mind. credits to AyZei!!!!!!!!!!
