Dìdi (弟弟)
i don’t know if this film has warmed my heart or hit a nerve. Being asian sometimes feel like you’re less superior to most races i’m not sure how to explain it and when Didi kept performing and trying to fit in i felt so bad and also seen in some way. “You’re pretty cute, for an asian.” 🥀Also seeing the mom raised her children and then getting blamed and put down by other relatives was so disheartening to see as she was raising them by herself when her husband was away working. Adding to the fact that Didi’s mom brought up how they came to a western country hoping her kids get a better lives than they did is adding to how sad the film is . Knowing how toxic it can be while being around other asian families where they compare their kids a lot in a materialistic kinda way and seeing didi asking his mom if she feels ashamed of him because other kids are doing “better” is so sad. Movies like didi and everything everywhere all at once hits a nerve compared to other “sad” films because you feel like you can relate to it and you see your people and their struggles being represented as well. The arguments, conversations being in two separate languages as well is so important to adding that depth of understanding and relating to the movie. Seeing the mom and her art reminds me as well that moms were our age too and had their own dreams and their own life they pictured living, it’s just so sad. The last scene where the mom just looks at Didi in such a nurturing and loving way i just started crying again. Also understanding Mandarin made the movie more enjoyable and the emotion of the words they were using.
