The Notebook

Yeah I’m never watching The Notebook again. A lot of my personal life really aligned for my first viewing and it seriously overwhelmed me. I should have known though, it’s a Nicholas Sparks movie. I actually have an axe to grind here but it’s got nothing to do with the film itself. I’ve read people describe the romance between Noah and Allie as ‘abusive’, which is a really serious word to be throwing around. Yeah they scream at each other, push each other away, they even verge on violent. But that’s passion, something that seems to be lost from recent romance films, everything has become so infected with passivity. I would absolutely rather my wife threw a plate at me, that means that she cares enough to get angry. That’s something you can work with, not silence and passive aggression. Which is probably why The Notebook is still so highly regarded, it manages to depict a real, passionate relationship.
