Lady Bird
An incredible coming of age movie and fantastic directorial debut by Greta Gerwig.
Lady Bird is someone who is both so sure of what she wants and doesn’t want, yet doesn’t know who she is.
She wants to go to school in a big city, be around culture, decides to act in the school play. Yet she has no direction in what she wants to study, specification in the culture she’s yearning for, and has little passion for her extra curriculars or what she actually wants to do with her life.
This desire for wanting more out of life and the associated guilt when you realize it boils down to not wanting to become your parents.
Her relationship with her mother also visualizes this contradiction. The best scenes in the movie are Lady Bird and her mom going from laughing/enjoying each other’s company, then in a split second, arguing with each other.
Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf are incredible, the scene when she’s trying on dresses broke me.
One of my favourite films of all time.
