Underground
since I rewatched this film last night I came to a conclusion that this is emir kusturica mugnm opes and also the mugnm opes of yugoslav cinema all of the biggest actors from the former yugoslavia are here Miki Manojlović Lazar Ristovski Mirjana Joković Mirjana Karanović Slavko Štimac Srđan and his father Bora Todorović Bata Stojkovic Davor Dujmović Dragan Nikolić this film is the perfect film to help you start watching yugoslav films it also covers 50 years of the country history from the naczi occupation in 1941 to the start of the Croatian war of independence its a masterpiece in every aspect of the film also this great and beautiful soundtrack by Goran bregovic is like the cherry on top this beautiful yugoslav film and maybe the last act of the film is dark and tragic and sad but the ending is an optimistic one the ending takes place after blacky death in some short of a dream maybe it's the after life in the ending we see all of our characters including everyone who died we see them looking the same as they were in their last happy moment before they died we see everyone celebrating Jovan wedding we see everyone happy and alive we see Marko and Natalia together we see blacky with vara and Jovan we even see bato standing up and dancing we even see blacky forgiving Marko and after a few words from Ivan we them all dancing happily to the song sheva by Goran bregovic in a never ending loop it's a bitter sweet ending maybe they are all dead but we all have this last happy moment for our characters the ending really reminds my of the ending from federico fellini 8½ but in my opinion this one is better a beautiful ending to a beautiful masterpiece that is underground and how can I forget to mention that the film won the palme d'Or award in the 1995 cannes film festival the film made fall in love with yugoslav history music and cinema the beauty of this film is unbelievable the brilliant camera work vliko filač every act of this film feels like its another film tha first act рат ( war ) the second act хладни рат (cold war) and the third and final act рат ( war) let's talk about the character first Marko dren played beautifully by the legendary miki manojlovic Marko is a poet who becomes a member of the communist party of yugoslavia Marko is a ruthless man who will do everything to get what he wants even though he is the the bad man in the film you can not hate and his ending is tragic our second leading man is Petar popara chrni (blacky) played magnificently be the great lazar ristovski he is an electrician who becomes a prominent member of the communist party he is by far the character who suffered the most in the film being lied to for twenty years by the man he considereds his brother and his lover he loses his wife and later on his son and in the end he is left alone in the yugoslav wars where he becomes a Serbian nationalist and after Marko is killed under his orders although I he didn't know its was Marko and Natalia he ordered to kill he dies after looking for his son Jovan one last time the third most prominent character in the film is Natalia zokov played by Mirjana Joković Natalia is the main focus of the love triangle with blacky and Marko in the start of the film she is the lover of of blacky after the start of the war of the war she starts a romance with Franz a naczi comnder and after she let's Marko Seduce her she becomes his wife after the end of the war she becomes an alcoholic after having remorse about what they are doing in the celer her ending is tragic as she dies with her true love Marko there a lot more characters I can get into but those are the three main ones the film also has some real life footage of the bombing in balgrde and the march after the war and finally the state funeral of tito the film is dark and tragic and beautiful and sad and funny all in the same time it's a beautiful work of art with some of the scenes of all time the beginning is beautiful the ending as I mentioned before the two scenes where they are singing the song mesecina together and of course the stani stani ibar vodo scene with blacky and one of my favourite is in the wedding segment its when Marko and Natalia go and start to fight and then after they make up blacky comes in and we see him heartbroken from seeing his love of life and his brother and then he tells Marko "lets brake the tradition of a man killing his best friend " we can see although he is angry and heartbroken at the betrayal by his brother he can not bring himself to kill him kusturica really made here a work of art and in my opinion no film will ever be as beautiful as this one I listen to the film soundtrack on a regular basis every time I am sed I watch this film and I becomes happy this is not cinema or film its art with all my love to the once upon a time there was a country version this one is the better version I just love this film it really is a masterpiece if you didn't see it already watch it you will not regret it and I wanted to end on a quote from Marko "Рат није рат док брат не убије брата."
(A war is no war until the brother kills his brother.) this was my review for my favourite film of all time underground ( podzemlje)
