Corpse Bride
tim burton the genius you are
the way the world of the dead is full of color and music while the world of the living is dark, colorless, sad, and filled with only suffocating societal expectations and superficial relationships... for most characters, dying is being freed from this melancholic world.
still, that doesn't mean one should take the other's choice. emily knew victor's choice had been to stay alive, even if his belief that victoria had forgotten him and his sad reality with his parents had made him briefly choose death. in the end, she realized that she couldn't destroy someone else's dreams and take away victor's choice like what was done to her.
unfortunately for emily, the color and music after death weren't enough to bring her happiness, because her chance at happiness was in the world of the living with the man who she loved, but betrayed her and ripped away her chance at love and happiness in her life. the happiness her romantic heart believed she could have in the monotous world was taken away, and not even the ironic liveliness that the world of the dead had was enough to heal her broken heart. all she wanted was to rest in peace, because, no matter how beautiful the world of the dead was, it wasn't beautiful to her - to her, it meant eternal suffering and sadness. victor, who inhabited that world which destroyed and broke her, could never bring her the fulfillment she deserves because none of that positivity exists in his world.
at least, in the end, she was able to make her own choices. she was freed. and she chose to let victor live the life he was supposed to, realizing that her endless waiting for true love was not the solution for her sorrows - she can rest in piece independently, without having to wait for a lover to free her from her eternal suffering.
victor might be living with victoria in an unhappy world, but hopefully they will be able to build a little bit of happiness for themselves before they join each other in the world of the dead and experience even livelier joy.
