Godzilla
Not a perfect technical film there are some things that are a little rough around the edges but from a pure reactionary standpoint, the subtext of this being about post WWII Japan this movie is still haunting. The scenes that always stuck out to me when I watched this as a child and still stick out to me as an adult is the scene where a mother is hugging her three children saying that they’ll be reuniting with their father again soon, the makeshift medical building full of injured people the morning after Godzilla terrorizes Tokyo, and the choir of girls singing and wishing for peace after the events of the night before. The true disturbing nature of the destruction is taken with such sincerity in this first entry that its kind of crazy how in just a couple movies later he’s getting a tree shoved down his throat by King Kong, drop kicking a big beetle, doing dance moves on Planet X, and using his atomic breath to launch himself across the battlefield against the Smog Monster. Either way this has been and still is my favorite Godzilla movie tonally it falls short on characters and Godzilla himself is a little inconsistent looking (due to Godzilla being three separate suites a full body, just legs, and a puppet I believe, plus an extra dodad for just his tail) beyond that though the story, effects for the time, what it manages to convey are all expertly done and I adore this movie.
