Drinking Buddies
i don’t know how to explain it, but this is exactly my favorite type of film. there’s barely any background music, the shaky handheld camerawork makes it feel like you’re standing in the room with these people, and the conversations are so natural that you stop feeling like you’re watching actors and start feeling like you’re eavesdropping on real lives.
the friendship dynamic, or whatever confusing thing Kate and Luke had going on, was easily the most interesting part of the film. neither of them ever fully crossed the line, but they never really stayed behind it either. it felt messy in a way that most relationship movies avoid.
what i loved most is that the film never tries to force a big dramatic moment or tell you exactly how to feel. it just lets these characters exist, make questionable decisions, and deal with the consequences. by the end i was way more invested in them than i expected to be. maybe nothing huge happens, but that’s kind of the point. it feels less like a movie and more like a glimpse into a few months of real people’s lives.
