Rope
Incredible.
Rope is the first film in a fake long take with whole scenes formed by 10 minutes each, after this film the cinema will not be the same. Hitchcock has the grace of theatrical direction but glorified by the chamber movement
never doing useless and unnecessary virtuosities.
Technically, here we see the integral basis of cinema; a lesson in directing and cinematography for everyone, aspiring and not. A capacity for reading and directing the image, scenes and actors immense (not to mention the Oscar performance of James Stewart). Impeccably staged, but with an almost perfect staging with an ability to go to extremes in a few imman rooms, taking the majority of today’s thrillers, dull and poor, and disintegrating them without the slightest difficulty.
I’m almost crying by how amazing the cinema seems to be sometimes.
