The Witch
I don’t know how to start this fucking review, I think it’s such a masterpiece.
This is an atmospheric film more than 'scary' (although in the end the atmosphere is real fear and fright) and I loved it from beginning to end. I loved the characterization of the characters and their interpersonal relationships with certain family members that make them in a sense slaves to their instincts (see the relationship between mother and daughter after the excommunication of Samuel). I loved the direction, a very static and functional use of the video camera, the shots that immerse you in the scene, aim to make you empathize (thanks to the context recreated in an excellent way) and they do it a lot. I also loved the use of colors. The unhappiness in the restrictions that this family imposes itself in the name of God is palpable, they live in contrition, which has taken with it joy and which forces them to live in the shadow of original sin. The director’s choice to leave open the discussion about the true meaning of the film is perfect, also because it is diverted by the empathy that is created with the characters; We are almost forced to cast out our critical spirit and this is a deliberate choice that made me crazy.
The tension is built very well, the growing music that is the background protagonist of the static shots is something incredible, it’s all structured flawlessly; you can’t wait for this music you hear to end , then, however, you discover that the pivot of this tension is not only the music, because also the silences, the images, the places, the atmosphere and the context are deafening and of a unique tension. The tension itself never explodes completely, but it is always balanced at the same point throughout the duration of the work without obvious drops. Nothing is what it seems. Among the great doubts that arise is that concerning the interpretation of the finale, voluntarily left open by Eggers. I am delighted
