Hulk
Honestly this has got to be one of my favourite superhero films of all time and tbh I shouldnt even say superhero but films.
From the personification of Hulk being born from Abuse. The cinematography. The music…my god this music. It really feels like one of those cancelled superhero films you hear about but it actually got made this time.
This took everything i ever loved in comic books when reading them as a child. Such such heavy material juxtaposed with the slight campy touches like “nanomeds”.
The cast was phenomenal too every actor acted their ass off for this film. Everyone baring talbot was so deep and intriguing. From Bruces childhood abuse. To Bettys abandonment. To Thunderbolt Ross’s inability to empathise and addiction to control the uncontrollables in his life, Bruce & Betty being at the heart of that. And ofc Nick Noltes incredible performance as the “father” not even given a name not even listed as Dad but only as father. His God complex which ended up causing a horrific event.
The trauma Bruce suffered being the allegory of the Hulk is truly incredible and takes it back to the classic universal monsters lore. Hulk IS THEEE unresolved trauma, damage and repression that caused all this rage within him. And this is where superhero stories ever since the beginning played best. The psychological dramas dressed as superheroes is exactly what’s missing in many superhero and overall films today. And to see this get 2.5 star average rating is horrific.
This experimental era of the undefined when superhero movies were new and there’d been no formula no rule book is truly where the creative genius came to be, like flowers that grew from concrete. The campy comic panelling. The cuts the freezes. It creates character and so much of that is what we miss today. This desperation of being nonchalant this desperation of being simple and minimalist that we see everyday being pressed into society.
They way that the Hulk actually interacts with the world when he's first born makes it feel all that more authentic even tho this atomically green giant shouldn't be fathomable. This interaction between monster and environment subconsciously connects a more realistic and effective way of blending cgi with reality. The cinematography of this massive creature was insane the psychological framing was spectacular. When we first see the Hulk and he first sees a very important character. The hulk is framed into a door. And my word i could talk about this shot for hours and hours. It firstly miniaturising such a large character back regressing him to being a child as he sees his father again. And his father opening that door just like the way he did when he was younger to now fully see that trauma that rage that repression manifested. Im getting shivers just thinking about that! Im so glad i got this and waited for ages to finally get this on blu ray.
To conclude this overtly long review. This is one of my favourite films ive seen and theres nothing anyone can say differently any of these filmbros can do one this is such an incredible film and YES WAY AHEAD not of time being beyond what the average punter can think of what a film is and should represent. True storytelling.
What a film. From the set design to the colour grading. Honestly adored sm about this and theres very little id change. I love the 00s superhero films so much, ofc because it’s a very familiar feeling to when I was growing up. But that authentic feeling that just feels too cold in modern movies.
Lovely lovely picture! The way the father still all the way at the end doesnt understand who the hulk truly is! Telling bruce to “Struggle no more” and to give him his power. He doesnt understand that it isnt his powerful god like energy and state. And its almost like extreme irony, a father is there to help their child and take their pain away for selfless and unconditional reasons. But this is only ego and selfish. What a film.
