Pocahontas
Is this film problematic? Yes. Do I still love it? Yes. Why? Let me explain.
The real Pocahontas, or should I say Matoaka, had a really sad life, and obviously, Disney didn't tell the story accurately. But what were you expecting? Should Disney have made a film where Pocahontas get's kidnapped, raped and murdered, and expect kids to watch it? Of course not, instead, Disney told a story about the love of nature, family and the wrongs of colonisation, in a way that kids can understand it.
Obviously this film could benefit from some changes, for example, making the white settlers still evil in the end, and I would have Pocahontas more interested in the safety of her tribe than in her romance with John. I would keep John Smith a good guy, (even if it's historically inaccurate) and have the natives win against the settlers, making them return to England.
At the end of the day, the Disney film, still makes Pocahontas a hero, just like she was in real life, and gave her the happy ending she deserved. She defended her people and her land, (even if we don't like how it was portrait). Disney made her fall in love with Smith so that kids could understand that love is a powerful thing and that we can love whoever we want, no matter their origin, nationality or skin colour, what matters is their personality.
The songs, the visuals are some of the best in any Disney film. I love films about native Americans, and I have always been fascinated for their love for nature, and I really relate to them in this way.
So, would it be better if it was a little different? Yes, but still, this film has a special place in my heart, and I think more people could learn how to fall in love with it. Please don't hate me!
