Downfall
I really enjoyed this film. I have a morbid fascination with Hitler and the Nazi’s, and I like how this film portrays the “behind the scenes” of Hitler and the Nazi’s as opposed to the perspective of the Jews (as most WWII films tend to do). I also have a morbid fascination with bunkers, so this film really ticked all the boxes. I didn’t feel bored during any point, and even though I essentially knew the plot and what was going to happen (as the film is a depiction, more or less, of true events), I was still captivated by it. I think the actors, especially the actor playing Hitler, did a stellar job. You can really see Hitler deteriorating simultaneously as Berlin is falling to the Soviets, which is almost poetic, but at the same time you almost feel bad for Hitler (which is very difficult to do, so props to this film and to Bruno Ganz’s acting.) The only moment that I found ever so slightly disappointing was the scene when Hitler and Eva kill themselves; we all knew it was coming, and I was expecting a graphic, intense scene of their last moments, but instead we just heard a gunshot. That being said, this is a great film!
