unexpectedly funny in character details, and impressive in terms of practical effects and editing. genuinely a super immersive experience. at the rough mid-point this turns from kooky and tense to completely ridiculous. but there is far too little on the cenobites themselves (do the 8 critically panned sequels focus on their backstory??). i desperately wanted to see what they got up too in their realm. frank is the real villain here.

love love love the alien character design. strikes the balance between mirroring grace and still being distinctly non-human in pretty much every conceivable way. that being said i think grace is a little under-fleshed out. him having no family seems quite convenient and isn’t dived into enough. ending very sweet though!!! i heard someone call this a live action pixar movie and that kinda stuck with me. true…but still, if that’s what they were going for, it’s a good one !
