Watched in my English class.
There were a lot of elements here that I thought were fantastic. Notably, the screenplay adapted from the play is incredible. I thought what it had to say about masculinity in the black community and how it’s shaped and molded by socio-economic conditions and race and class structures to be really moving. All of the performances were great, especially Viola Davis’. On paper this is a great movie.
But GODDDDD the direction is so boring. Every shot is so bland, every camera movement so static, all of the lighting so sterilized. The movie is about 30 minutes too long for it’s own good. Could’ve been great, but it’s severely held back by it’s visuals. This shit has no sauce all ingredients
