Narratively there’s not much to the John Wayne starring *Hellfighters*, this dual relationship family drama plot-line didn’t do a whole lot for me and the script has twinges of the expected misogyny that sadly pops up far too often in Wayne films (to no one’s surprise) but wow was there a lot of pretty shots in here and what it did manage to do right in terms of the script makes it a fairly decent and enjoyable outing for me. Maybe it’s because I’m plagued by the modern rapid-cut style but I was also impressed by the way this was edited, the script is all over the place which gave editor Folmar Blangsted a tough job but I thought he pulled it off pretty well all things considered. I was also surprised to see this is a solid acting outing from Wayne, it’s nothing special obviously and he’s still pretty much playing John Wayne but I had a decent time watching him here which is good for him. Out of the supporting cast no one was really worth mentioning outside of Vera Miles who I loved in *The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance* and this one, although with a much worse script, is no different. There’s not much else to say about it, I’ll reiterate how good a lot of these shots looked but the simple story and script don’t leave me itching to write a long review, I’m not sure I’d exactly recommend it because I’m not sure who’s watching something like this besides me but I had an enjoyable enough time and that’s all that really matters at the end of the day.
