World Autism Acceptance Week is traditionally at the end of March or beginning of April each year. At my school we recognize this week and have a lesson to teach understanding and empathy. We talk about autism as a condition that some people are born with (it is not in any way contagious) where their senses interpret information differently than most people. It doesn't mean they are sick or broken in any way, they are just seeing the world differently. I've used many different activities and short films. This is my favorite, if you are interested: Amazing Things Happen. It is great for 2nd grade plus.
Loop is a film about an non verbal autistic girl who is experiencing the world in a different way. She goes out on a canoe with a very kind boy and together they learn from each other. It is a special video, but I do wish it went into greater depth exploring the issues. I will be using this next year.
