*“To live, would be an awfully big adventure”

I can probably count the films on both hands that actually manage to capture the wondrous mystery of magic itself. Films that entirely encapsulate the poetic tone and atmospheric nature of a true whimsical childhood adventure, whilst equally rich in powerful thematic undertones that resonate the complex human experience. Unafraid to venture into the darker melancholic elements of the material, whilst providing ultimate escapism for a young mind into a world that breathes deeper meaning towards a growing sense of life itself. P.J Hogan’s Peter Pan is certainly one of them.
Major emotional beats of this film are burned into my brain from when my 6 year old self first experienced them on the big screen. Wendy was probably my first ever childhood crush. I didn’t understand it yet but I felt Peter’s loneliness and pain. Ideas of adolescent innocence clashing with the realities of adulthood still ring true in my subconscious today. The power of imagination can lead you to discover parts of yourself that might have lay dormant forever.
Timeless cinematic endeavours that stay with you for an eternity.
