*SIFF FutureWave Selection*
I've put off writing this review for a few days now just because of how entirely uninspired I was by this movie. As such, I'll keep it short and to the point.
First, the positives. There was a point about 3/4 of the way through where I felt the prenatal flickering of a single doubt about the way I had evaluated the movie up until that moment. I can't quite describe it, but several elements must have aligned perfectly and I briefly found myself watching a decent production. Anyways, that moment passed and I very quickly returned to a state of boredom and displeasure. Those are the positives.
The negatives are innumerable, but I'll highlight a few key ones. First, why is the movie so long? Someone must have told director Storm Saulter that people would pay to watch by the minute, because he turned a cheap 90-minutes-or-less comeback flick into a nearly-2-hour waste of time. It was like a Jamaican version of *Goodfellas*, except based on track and field and bad and also not good. It really wasn't much like *Goodfellas* at all. I only mention that to bring up Scorsese, because very early into this film we get a scene of main character Akeem's brother scamming bumbling old Americans out of their retirement funds in a moment that looks EXACTLY like [this scene from *The Wolf of Wall Street*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1Vtzn3MZyA). I'm all for inspiration, but plagiarism is entirely different. Back to the issue of length. If the 2 hours really is necessary, why is not spent developing the actual race? Isn't that the important part? No, instead we get ETERNITIES of exposition, a love triangle that makes NO sense, and an undeveloped antagonist. In other news, the technical aspects of this film aren't much better. There are completely unnecessary fades scattered throughout, subtitles that leave the audience much more confused than they started, and a photoshop job of a newspaper front page at the very end of the movie that still makes me shudder 4 days later. The cinematography is nothing special, but probably the film's most consistently passable element.
All in all, it's a cheap film that tries to be way too serious at some moments, ruins the mood with humor when it's entirely inappropriate at others, and doesn't leave you with any sort of warm fuzzy feeling.
Also, why in the name of all that is holy do we get a cameo from ***** ****? 100% useless and very poorly executed.
