I remember seeing at least the last half of this back in the day, not sure if it was when it premiered or when they reran it before the follow up. Either way I’ve had an itching to watch it again, but good lord is it hard to find! For some reason the follow up is on some streaming sites like everyone’s favorite Tubi but not the first. Finally was able to find a copy on Archive.org, and it is an interesting one.
This one is a recording from the two nights it premiered, complete with commercials and a little bit of the programs that aired before both nights. Although it does make it run longer, I just couldn’t help but watch most of these, it’s quite the time capsule! Felt appropriate to watch it now because this weekend I had went to my 20 year high school reunion and I did graduate around this time. Some fond memories such as a Martin Scorsese Mastercard commercial, seeing the Olympics logo in the corner, the shows that aired at the time, I felt the ones I saw the most were for the Friends finale which was that same week (Frasier as well but that unfortunately never got the same press). Something I miss about recording programs off your VCR back in the day, something you don’t get when you can check that stuff out later on a streaming service. Hell I think I might keep this copy due to that, even if they decide to release this on 4k someday.
Anyway I feel like this review is gonna be more about the experience than the miniseries itself, but it’s as decent as I remember. Lot of the tropes we love or hate, a good sized cast, and at least the vhs quality made the CG look somewhat passable.
