This was a very difficult show to rank for me. While watching, I definitely noticed some flaws, but the impact this show left makes me want to ignore them. Conceptually this show is perfect, I love detective/mystery shit and this show is all about that. Certainly not a perfect show, but when it’s good, there’s nothing like it.
SPOILERS ⬇️⬇️
Jung Ba-Reum is the greatest example of this show at its best. His arc throughout the show is insane, and the twists surrounding him are easily the best executed in the show. This show in the later episodes is constantly recontextualizing itself, and there’s probably so much more to love on a rewatch. By the end, he’s such a beautifully complex character and one of the best representations of guilt ever.
I also adore the rest of the main cast. Moo-chi serves as a very good protagonist at the start and a great deuteragonist in the latter half. Bong-Yi is also probably one of the most lovable characters ever made. Sung Yo-Han was also so interesting once we started learning more about him. There are several other characters I could talk about but those are the ones who really stood out to me.
Again though, this show isn’t perfect. The biggest issue when it comes to writing for me was that a lot of the time the show will just lie to the audience so they could end the episode with a twist. The twists are one of the strongest parts of the show and some of the best ever, but they are held back a bit because of this. Having twists that lead to nothing starts to not work after a while, and it cheapens the real twists a bit as well.
The show also is over dramatic at times, which I feel like might just be the nature of k dramas, but it is something I noticed pretty often. The music and editing can be very overbearing, of course not enough to ruin scenes but it’s definitely noticeable. Some of the dialogue is also pretty corny on occasion. There was this one moment in the OZ arc where Ba-Reum is like “welcome to the mouse trap you dirty rats” and then he gains superpowers and wins a fight against 3 dudes. That was by far the worst example though. Point is that the show does lack subtlety a lot of the time which holds it back slightly.
Those are the only real critiques I have for the show, and they aren’t even close to enough to stop me from loving it. These characters are way too likable, the plot is way too interesting, and the ending is way too good for me to care. The good far outweighs the bad and every minute of these long ass episodes was worth it
