i do not usually write long reviews but bear with me here.
the first heartbreak between marianne and connell felt too uncomfortable personally because it felt like it was my own.
"i would never pretend to not know you connell."
this line replayed in my head when they met again in college and marianne still did not pretend to not know him. maybe it is basic decency, but it still felt deeply loving somehow. as if she still cared for him despite everything he did.
"i was probably afraid you would not want me anymore."
the italian countryside summer vacation has always been a metaphor to me and somehow the blueprint for all my favourite relationships. call me by your name is my favourite film and the setting there feels just as important as the characters themselves. normal people gives me that exact same feeling. the rattling bikes, the dry leaves, the quiet warmth of summer. it all feels unbearably tender and familiar. when marianne opens up emotionally it almost feels like she is standing there completely exposed, which is why her physical vulnerability in that scene feels so perfect and honest.
"i hope you know none of that is your fault."
the distance between them when marianne is in sweden creates this unbearable sense of yearning that somehow hurts and comforts you at the same time. connell sounds like hope in those moments. like an escape. and i keep wondering if marianne hurts herself over and over because even superficial love still feels safer than no love at all.
"we have lived our life in the same place so obviously it is a bit different being away from her."
the yearning and the silence and the lack of communication absolutely destroyed me inside and out.
"it is not like this with other people."
"i know, but i like you a lot more than other people."
okay so i will kill myself now
even in the final episode, during all those stolen moments together, they always seem physically naked because they finally feel emotionally naked too. vulnerable enough to fully exist beside one another.
this shit physically broke me </3
the cinematography and framing make connell and marianne feel painfully real, like they are somehow our own NORMAL PEOPLE
*i have loved you for the last time
is it a video? is it a video?
i have touched you for the last time
is it a video? is it a video?*
