Brokeback Mountain
I decided to rewatch this movie after almost two years and it was absolutely beautiful. I shed even more tears than when I first watched it.
Apart from the great acting and cinematography, this movie is very dear to me mainly because of its story and representation of queer struggles. What infuriates me is how so many people dare to make fun of this movie when it’s so clearly supposed to send out an entirely different message, a beautiful depiction of forbidden love, internalized homophobia and repressed emotions.
The pure yearning in this hurts so damn bad. Jack’s and Ennis’ relationship is devastating but realistic, knowing many queer people had to hide their identity because of social norms. I fully understood the way of which they wanted each other but couldn’t accept each other, and for Ennis’ case, couldn’t accept Jack nor himself.
Even though I hold a deep love for all of the characters, Ennis Del Mar stands out to me. He is very complex and you have to want to get him so that you can truly understand him and his character.
This movie is sad in a different way, it’s the kind of sad that hits you slowly. It’s quiet and bittersweet. I have not felt this sort of feeling during a movie until I watched Brokeback Mountain. It reminds me of what pain it is to love in a judgmental and cruel world. They really don’t make movies like this anymore.
