Sinners
"you keep dancing with the devil... one day he's gonna follow you home."michael b jordan deserved that oscar, and sinners deserved every oscar it got and more. this has to be the most beautiful movie I have ever watching I am truly devastated. I have not sobbed that hard to a movie in a while until this movie, I am truly, generationally scarred. why would they ever do this to me? everything about this movie is perfect. the aspect ratio change althroughout sometimes being subtle, and then other times the zoom out being shown? perfection, the framing, the script, the characters, the dialogue. I will never get over this movie.
"It's cause of me. my daddy told me, said the devil was coming on account of my music."
the fact that sinners spends the first 30 minutes of the movie introducing each character perfectly, we get a taste of them and their characters, we get to know them. its almost like we are there with them, you don't see the change coming, the music, the environment, the people, the emotions. everything about it just draws you in, like your in a trance.
"the best part of me was him."
every character in this movie was so devastating, bo and grace will haunt me forever, grace I could never be mad at you. the fact that he threatened her daughter and she welcomed them in, full of grief and anger. the fact that she killed bo, and also herself. annie was also another devastating character, the fact she lost her child and then made smoke promise to kill her if she was turned, because someone was waiting for her, and him too. and then when she is dying all she says is "you promised me" also when annie calls smoke elijah? oh my god.
also the fact that each character has their own sin, hence the name sinners, sammie lies, mary hates, pearline is adultering, bo gambles, grace is selfish, smoke is a murderer, stack's is greed, slim is a drunk, and annie practices hoodoo.
"you know something? maybe once a week, I wake up paralysed, reliving that night."
the music in this movie has to be one of the most beautiful things about this, genuinely, along with the whole movie being beautiful in itself the music sets the tone for the movie completely.
"but before the sun went down, I think that was the best day of my life. was it like that for you?"
smoke and stack genuinely upset me, the fact that stack has to just live on as a vampire, forever, and smoke had to grieve his brother, multiple times, don't even get me started. the fact that they will never see each other again after that day, stack was the one person that smoke couldn't kill; instead, made him promise not to touch sammie, let him live his life. the fact that he listened. he can't even see himself in the mirror anymore, which really amplifies the whole "last time I seen my brother" as they're twins, he can't see himself, nor can he see his brother.
"no doubt about it."
they had created something beautiful, they had dreams and hopes, they were going to change the world. the fact that it didn't even last 24 hours, yet it still remains to be the best day of their lives? they were free.
also, slim sacrificing himself so that the others can hopefully get ahead, and him also telling the story of how rice died, slim has lived many years and has suffered that of a man who has lived too long.
"last time I seen my brother. last time I seen the sun."
when it shows smoke trying to roll a cigarette and his hands shaking, and then a flashback to when stack would pass him the rolled cigarette, something that stack would do for him because of his ptsd from the war and also his newfound trauma.
another part of this movie I genuinely appreciated was the precautions and mysetry they managed to leave throughout, especially when they're all inside and the vampires are out and they find that body; instead of blaming each other and fighting they test it through logic, but they also keep the mystery by having a few not want to eat the cloves, that all being a build-up to the fact it wasn't even blood, just spilt beer, and when they try to let him inside its too late.
"and just for a few hours, we was free."
even if there were no vampires, they still would’ve all died in the morning.
