"its my first day of highschool. i have seven new notebooks, a skirt i hate, and a stomach ache."
"all that crap you hear on tv about communication and expressing feelings is a lie. no one really cares what you have to say."
i am sobbing, that was one of the most beautiful movies i have ever watched, it had such a beautiful message and genuinely portrayed everything so well and devastatingly. melinda didn't deserve anything that happened to her, this movie represented sexual assault survivors so well, it showed how it affects them and how hard it is to tell someone, especially when people wont believe you.
"it happened. theres no avoiding it. no forgetting."
i feel like i have no words but i need to express how i feel, this movie has changed me, made me feel things differently. this movie was so raw and real--it took a huge topic and made it simple. this movie is directed so beautifully every scene feels like it has some sort of meaning, some sort of symbolism. the colouring in the movie made everything feel satisfying and complex.
this movie expressed the realness and fear of rape, and of telling someone you were raped, she didn't tell anyone for a whole year, and when she was raped she called the cops but didn't say anything. and when she finally told someone she had to write it down, and when she told her who had raped her she didn't believe her.
"was it someone from this school? who was it? melinda, tell me!"
"it was andy evans."
"what? i can't believe you. liar! your jealous! im popular and i'm going to prom and you're telling me this. that's twisted, melinda! seriously, you're sick. you need help!"
"so i raped you? i could have any girl in this school i wanted. willingly! why would i rape you? you're not even attractive."
people find it so hard to believe that someone they know has raped someone, all the confrontation and the unwillingness to believe made this movie feel even more real, because that is how ir actually is. and then when andy harrassed her as he "didn't rape her", claiming she ruined everything for him made it even more disgusting. I genuinley felt so terrible for melinda all throughout this movie.
"i wonder how long it would take for anyone to notice if i just stopped talking."
when her parent's gifted her the art supplies that scene made me genuinely feel so much, melinda always thought she was invisible and no one noticed her, but her parents did. they noticed how she was acting different, they noticed she was getting into art. and them giving her this made her feel more guilt about not telling them what had happened to her. she doesn't have the words to tell them, to tell anyone. even if its all she thinks about, she just cant say the words. she chooses to not speak, to not say anything, but her actions and facial expressions tell us all we need to know.
"you don't like anything. you're the most depressed person I've ever met. and excuse me for saying this, but I think you need professional help."
this movie is genuinely beautiful and made me feel so much. its genuinely saddening how many people have been raped or sexually assaulted and not been able to speak.
"open your mouth, sordino. open your damn mouth!"
"I'm here if you want to talk. even if I'm not, you know, here."
