Spencer
It’s not just me who loves you!

Spencer is an emotional, profound and breathtaking deep dive into the unfortunate life of the people’s princess, Diana. What most biopics fail to achieve looking at a persons entire lifetime, Spencer achieves in the span of just 3 days in which we are engulfed into her corrupted psyche caused by her treatment from the Royal Family. What i thought was going to be your typical biopic ended up as a surrealist psychological drama in which we are taken on a series of jarring images and upsetting conversations, specifically the ones relating to diana’s own identity in reference to currency and her conversation at the pool table. Claire Mathons careful and masterful hand completely enhances the movie and guides us through dianas mind, and in that same sense takes us down the same nightmare she was living, with stunningly haunting visuals; specific scenes that come to mind are those of diana feasting on the pearls she had no choice to accept, only to regurgitate the dish immediately after and also those of Anne Boleyn who also suffered at the hand of the royals. Diana’s immaterial imperfections create the biggest conflict with her and the family, her needs do not resemble that of those around her and instead she desires simply to love and be loved, to finally feel the warmth her and her children so desperately seem to plead for throughout the duration of their stay.
With a fantastic performance from Kristen Stewart, Larrain transports us back to a time where a majority of the humanity which diana was so adored for is made clear by her suffering, except this time we don’t just see what’s on the papers and in the news, we are taken to the most intimate parts of her brain and experience the raw emotions she felt during her time, and it is something that will stick with me for life.
