Sinners
Words cannot be put in a sentence to explain how I feel right now.
I spent an hour plus just walking and talking to my friends about this movie.
All I could say as I was leaving was "Wow" over and over again.
When I stepped outside I immediately starting talking about my great grandfather and how he played the accordion, how he toured around and played music for money, went to the capital city to do it too, which is a story my parents would tell me. I talked about how Romani people expressed themselves through music and dance, how through suffering they were bonded through the soul of the community and shared experience and music.
The vampires in this movie is not "white people" although there be an element of that. The vampires in this movie ARE CULTURE VAMPIRES. People who hold no suffering expirience no pain and yet steal from others to take their pain theirs. This is why the vampire was singing Irish music and dancing an Irish dance, THE VAMPIRE KILLED AN IRISH MAN AND STOLE HIS CULTURE. The Irish also famously oppressed under the rule of the British, as are the black people in America.
Soulless music is sufferingless music.
Soul music and the blues was born out of black culture and the memory of slavery and is tied to suffering. Sammy at the start was good at the blues, but Sammy at the end THROUGH EVERYTHING he expirienced, was the best version of the music that it could possibly be because it matures over the years it gets better with time. The shot of him crying and clutching his broken guitar might be one of the best shots in history. His suffering is who he is, to deny himself that and of the music would mean denying his own soul.
The shot in the club with the music and the one take is up there with best sequences ever. Not even close my mind was blown. People might think "haha this is weird" but thats because they're stupid morons who don't get art when it's slapping them in the face. HE IS CHANNELING HIS PAST, THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE. All of the people in his family and the family of those around him come out in that moment because they all share soul even in different forms and different styles. Its always soul.
The vampires also morally ask the question, why not just live forever? Because like with the scene with Sammy and Stack at the end, suffering is what makes living mean anything. "It was the best day of my life" intercut with scenes before the action was perfect.
One thing that blew my mind when I realised it was the involvement of the native Americans. If the vampires in the movie reprepresent culture vultures, then the native Americans were the first victims of them when the white settlers landed in America over 500 years ago. To them this is and will be a never ending war.
Yeah genuinely I could write essays and essays.
Cinema is alive.
Edit 1:
The actors in this film fucking killed it. Michael B Jordan as Smoke and Stack was perfect. I think the best performance though was Wunmi Mosaku as Annie was phenomenal especially the gorgeous scene with her breastfeeding her baby.
One amazing thing about this film is that it breaks so many taboos such as voodoo and the occult being portrayed in a positive, helpful manner instead of the stereotypical devil work thing. And actually that religion won't save you but your fellow man and your passion will.
I was watching the film and I thought: why am I hearing country music (a stereotypically white music) in this black club then I remembered. BLACK PEOPLE CREATED COUNTRY MUSIC. They also created Blues, rhythm and blues, soul, rock, jazz and so much more.
The cinematography in this movie was perfect. The one takes were perfect.
The VFX and practical effects were so fucking impressive especially with the twinning of Michael B Jordan, like how the fuck. Its so good that it lends to the story and makes you believe they really are brothers and not the same actor.
The sound effects were top notch and the sound design was out of this world good.
The music in the movie was beautiful.
Just remembered that the barn scene gave me full chills.
I love how the vampires were traditional vampires and couldn't cross the threshold without an invitation super fun and interesting. Also love the fact that everyone was an intelligent person and no one was really in the wrong except the KKK. That scene with the KKK was so fun and rewarding after the heartbreak that came before. At the end, as he was dying, Smoke didn't take the money and chose his family CHARACTER ARC COMPLETE.
