Spider-Man
Starting my BND pregame!
After not seeing it for years I am able to come into Sam Raimi’s adaptation on the wall crawler with new eyes and fresh memory, and without a doubt this is the quintessential formula that superhero movies should’ve followed!
I’ve always said that Toby Maguire does the best at playing Spider-man and I hope that my memory serves well as I go into the next two.
What makes this film so special is how alive it feel and how packed it is yet nothing ever feels unwelcome as it follows the same pacing and info that you would in a comic book! You feel as I’ve you’ve spent hours with Peter by the time you get to the thanksgiving march, and it turns out to continue giving you a lot more for the next hour or so.
You simply can’t help but smile the entire way through. Cringely and relatable at Peter being an awkward teenager, Amazed as Spider-man saved the day, and awed to the end as Peter resolved his mind and swings into the camera.
Really the only critiques I have from this one (and what I do remember from Raimi’s triology) is 1. Peter feeling a bit TOO awkward (even though Tobey does it spectacularly) and 2. Mary Jane Watson ( It sucks that this is the best and worst adaptation of the character simultaneously), and 3. The suit, I’m sorry I just never dug the white and the sharp lenses!
I almost forgot to mention Williams performance, because dear lord. The nailed his goblin despite not being able to have a face half the time, but this is also the first time I notice you can see his mouth under a mesh mask so he does kinda have it.
After this being such a pop culture gem it also feels like jingling keys whenever I recognize a clip or a meme I’ve seen over the years.
In the end I think we would’ve been better off going forward with this format or hero movie that it almost feels like a shame that the Batman was more influential on the genre.
