Saw
I'll start this review off saying that a year ago, I would have NEVER watched this movie. The concept alone freaked me out so much that when I read Wikipedia articles describing the plot of the series I blew it so far out of proportion to how the film actually was. What it actually was was a solid, original horror movie with amazing twists, interesting characters, and a good plot. There were some weird editing decisions and the metal music video-style editing during some sequences kind of dated some parts. Contrary to the opinions of many people, I actually kind of enjoyed Leigh Whannell's wacky acting choices and odd line deliveries and thought that it added a little needed humor to this otherwise serious crime movie. Besides, the dude was the film's writer, and they were making do with their very small budget. Speaking of Whannell's character, Adam, there were some serious (if out of place) homoerotic subtexts during many of the scenes between Adam and Lawrence, which gave it a probably unintentional extra layer of interest for viewers. I really enjoyed this film overall and its quality makes me want to watch the sequels (which are probably worse but whatever).
