Babylon
if you know me you know I love Babylon. Genuinely I will defend this movie until I die. I love the opening scene. I love the colours! I love the costumes! I love the scene when Manny has to get the camera in time for sunset! And the set piece where the studio is starting to introduce sound?! I love the score!!! I will never understand how Justin Hurwitz did not win the Oscar that year!! I genuinely believe he put magic in Manny and Nellie’s Theme because goddamn I hear it and I melt. And Voodoo Mama!! Absolute perfection.
And then also Diego Calva is a sensation! The fact that he hasn’t been cast in every single movie since is absolutely insane to me. He completely sells me every moment that he is on the screen of his love of cinema and also his love of Nellie.
ALSO the final scene is absolute perfection. The references across the film to Singin in the Rain and then Manny watching Singin in the Rain. Like??? And then Manny and Nellie’s Theme playing again. I just love cinema and I love Damien Chazelle. I think its time to watch Babylon again…
