Boogie Nights
holy fuck this was so amazing. brilliant in almost every single possible way. i was laughing my fucking ass off the entire time—like more than i think i’ve ever laughed at a movie before—but still this had immense emotional and intellectual depth. every tonal shift spanning from comedy to death was so flawlessly executed that i don’t even understand how it’s possible. plus every inch of every frame was visually perfect—photography, production design, colors, editing, everything. that opening long take was just…mwah! set the tone brilliantly right from the get-go. soundtrack was fantastic too, groovy as hell. finally, the cast is obviously insane, and every actor totally pulled their weight because every character was so alive and most of them were ridiculously funny.
i can’t even fully comprehend the feeling this film instilled in me. i walked in knowing practically nothing and with zero expectations, but i walked out of the theater giddy because i knew immediately that i’d seen absolute cinema. the entire time i was just smiling because this was so amazing. just one of those films that i’m so incredibly happy to have watched for the first time.
watched at a 70mm american cinematheque screening at the aero with jake. absolutely amazing evening.
