i clearly did not get what the movie was trying to say the first time i saw it.
what makes this clear is when Calum starts preparing for the future, doing small things like taking a polaroid or buying a carpet he knows he cant afford, just to leave Sophie with something that will remind her of her dad and can look back on. also the main one, recording each and every moment of their trip (the last time they are together). Calum spirals in and out of this mood where he worries about the future or where he doesnt care about anything in the world knowing he'll soon leave it all.
and then there's adult Sophie. suffering from a similar state of mind, she looks back on the videos, trying to find some sort of early sign of her dad's illness to make a connection with her state. but all her memories are fading, flashing in front of her.
also i read that the reason he spits at his reflection when Sophie talks about feeling sad at times, is because he hates that he passed his "depression" to his daughter.
