Hereditary
i'll never be able to explain to someone else why this is the one film that terrifies me above all else. never. it's damp earth beneath the feet, air of a basement too long closed off, mildew or something worse. it's the way grief pools and festers in families, never quite seen, only felt. it's the tension of a held breath that never exhales. aster crafts this horror on screen that i've never managed to find anywhere else (except with lake mungo, just a tad); something that genuinely crawled into the folds of my mind and never left. everything throughout feels warped and heavy, the edges of a typical nuclear family fraying, and all you can do is watch until there's nothing left but an abandoned god. really something i can only ever stomach in certain moments.
