Andrei Rublev
"He that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow."
Andrei Rublev is indeed a gem.
Tarkovsky takes us a look into the life of Andrei Rublev, an iconographer in medieval Russia.
The film presents us moral ambiguity that challenges the protagonist, Andrei Rublev himself. Not only that, Tarkovsky makes us challenge the philosophies of cynicism and humanism in this film, leaving us an epistemological ambiguity as well.
Andrei Rublev is an exposition to the nature of man, capable of great goodness, yet presents to us the frailty of man's morality through it's cruelty. It is also an exposition on the nature of Faith among monks through their self-punishment (vow of silence) to prove their loyalty to God.
Tarkovsky in a way connects the nature of man to morality and their faith.
Great film.
