The Thing
I don't want to seem biased because my favorite genre of horror movies is monster movies, but The Thing is a film and the epitome of the genre. The master of the genre Carpenter (creator and director of Halloween) presents us with a mystery thriller, in Antarctica in 1982. The script has a very interesting and harmonious flow throughout the duration of the film, which does not confuse you throughout the viewing. Incredible cinematography where from the moment the soldiers enter a "survival" mode, it gives you the impression that they are completely helpless and "alone" against the unknown. You can't trust anyone, not even the protagonist himself, at some point, and you, the viewer, don't even know if the character that appears on screen is a cheap imitation of the real thing... The film's tension and the building of fear, anxiety, and the final climax are masterpieces, and you understand this because the film makes you think that you're watching the 3rd act of it ,when you’re only half way into the film. Anxiety, anguish, and despair overwhelm you because, like the protagonists, you too have no idea what's out there and what you have to face to survive. Also, let's not forget the incredible practical effects for the time and the almost flawless sound design and soundtrack that heightens the suspense at many points in the film.
Incredible film for the time and not only, I loved it on the first screening and in my opinion we are talking about one of the classics in the "horror" genre.
P.S. However, I still can't decide in the end if Mack or the thing won 😭Αυτά
